FOLDING FAN, PROBABLY OF ENGLISH MANUFACTURE, WITH HAND-PAINTED DOUBLE LEAF, THE FRONT OF SATIN AND THE BACK OF SILK, EDGED WITH SWAN DOWN. ON RECTO TWO PHOTOS HAVE BEEN INCORPORATED IN THE LEAF, THAT I HAVE IDENTIFIED AS EMPEROR OF GERMANY  AND KING OF PRUSSIA FREDERICK III (1831/1888) AND HIS WIFE VICTORIA ADELAIDE MARY LOUISE OF SASSONIA COBURG GOTHA (1840/1901), FIRST DAUGHTER OF QUEEN VICTORIA OF UNITED KINGDOM. THE TWO IMAGES ARE SURROUNDED BY  PANSIES, A BUTTERFLY AND A LITTLE BIRD, AND THE PAINTING HAS BEEN SIGNED BY MAUVERT. AN IMPERIAL GERMAN CROWN HAS BEEN PAINTED ON THE VERSO. ALMOST CERTAINLY THE FAN IS COMMEMORATIVE OF THE LATE ASCENSION TO THE THRONE OF FREDERICK III ( MARCH 9, 1888), WHO WAS EMPEROR ONLY DURING THREE MONTHS BECAUSE OF HIS PREMATURE DEATH. GILT WOOD STICKS, METAL RIVET AND LOOP. ORIGINAL TASSEL. 1888 CA. CM.32,5. MAX. WIDTH CM. 60. STICKS 14+2 COMING FROM RAONI PONTES' COLLECTION.
